How do you stay active in Alberta’s metal community?

Being a part of the Pitch Black staff keeps me fairly active in the local metal scene. I also really enjoy putting on shows. Last year, I was heavily involved in organizing Red Deer’s Rock 4 Santa charity show. It was a lot of hard work, but so much fun and such a rewarding experience. When I’m not working on Pitch Black, I spend a lot of time booking/promoting shows and organizing merch for my husband’s band, Awkward Silence.

How did you first become involved in all the things you do?

I’ve been with Pitch Black as managing editor from day one, organizing photo shoots, interviewing local bands and Metal Maidens across Alberat, and just doing as much as I can to help out. Being lucky enough to get to work with one of my closest friends doesn’t hurt, and, of course, being married to a musician means I’m automatically involved our local music scene, too.

What keeps you motivated?

The kudos we receive about the work Pitch Black has done within Alberta’s metal community, the music, and the friends I make along the way make it all worthwhile, and will no doubt ensure I continue to do this for a long time.

Having interviewed the majority of Alberta Metal Maidens so far, what is your definition of a “Metal Maiden,” and what sets them apart from the stereotypical view that most people have when they hear the phrase “Metal Maiden?”

The one thing I love about our Metal Maidens is that they are genuine. They all live in Alberta and are all part of the metal community in their local cities, whether they be musicians, show promoters, music journalists, photographers, show goers, or wives/girlfriends who tend the merch tables. And, all the women we’ve featured so far just wanted to have some fun in front of the camera, and help us out in promoting Alberta’s thriving music culture, which is exactly the point.
