We Found The Body EP Uncovered

Written by Pamela Porosky 1 April 2009 One Comment

wftb-collage2We Found the Body has been raising a ruckus on the Calgary circuit since 2007, and on March 20 the Alberta metallers released their debut six-song EP at a killer sell-out show at The Stetson, with comedian Jason Rouse and Calgary thrashers Kilyakai in tow.

Guitarist Denim Wentzell graciously let us in on a few of the curiosities we had about the five-piece modern tech metal act’s recording process:

You decided to record at the Beach. What was behind this decision?
We wanted to record at a studio that had great gear to get the best possible recording that we could. Plus, we wanted to have a very proficient engineer working with us.

Who engineered?
Derek Sylwestrzak (The Beach). He has an amazing understanding of how Pro Tools works. It just made the recording process very efficient.

What kind of pre-planning did you do to make the most effective use of your studio time?
Lots of practicing [the selected songs] before we hit the studio.

What went into selecting the six songs that appear on the EP?
We wanted to have some of the earlier songs, as well as the newer songs. There are some very new songs that could have been recorded, but we decided to hold off on those. If we didn’t record some of the earlier tracks on this CD, it’s hard to say if they would have ever been recorded in the future.

Why did you decide to have Tue Madsen do the final mixing and mastering for you?
We wanted to have our mixing and mastering done by a very established individual within the metal world. As a band, we all listen to a number of bands that he has been involved with, and we like how his final products sound.

Did it come back the way you were hoping?
Absolutly. For this being our first CD, we are very happy with it. We talked with Tue throughout the time he was working on it, and made mention of things we were looking for. He came through on everything for us.

How long did the entire process take from pre-planning the album to completion?
The entire process took us just under three months. The artwork and layout for the CD took a lot of time to get to a finalized form: which pictures to use, where will they fit in… but we had an amazing artist – [Calgarian] Jme Messina – working with us who took the project very seriously and came up with great ideas for the layout.

What, if anything, will you change when it comes time to record again?

We would like to record more than six tracks for the next CD. This CD was funded by the band. To record at The Beach and have Tue involved, our budget would only allow for us to record six songs at the level in which we wanted them to sound.
